Family Chrysomelidae

Bodenheimer (Animal Life in Palestine, 1925) has this to say about this family:
The leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) are short oval beetles. They generally eat circular holes in the leaves of plants. Their larvae skeletonize leaves or develop in the interior of the plant.
The shining metallic red and green Chrysomela angelica, which is common in the spring on Inula and other herbs in humid habitats, and the steel green C. orientlis belong to the most beautiful species we have. The larvae of the green Cassida viridis cover themselves with their own excrement and those of the yellow brown Clytra novempunctata even form a larval house of it. Larvae of Hispa testacea live by mining in the leaves of Cistus. Labidostomis decipiens and L. hebraea found on vine leaves and the small green metallic Gynandrophthalma viridana living on many fruit trees are injurious. In January/February the small blue Marseulia dilativentris abound in the wheat fields, especially in those on the hills, or at the foot of the hills. The pale red-brown "red-fly" Rhaphidopalpa foveicollis which is very active even during the hot hours in the summer, feeds very commonly on cucurbitaceous plants. The long slender larvae feed on and in the roots of the same host plant.
To this family belong also the numerous flea btles (Halticinae). They are common and their feeding holes are very conspicuous on the leaves of their host plants. The steel-blue Phyllotreta cruciferae lives on Cruciferae, the green Haltica quercorum on Rubus. (He then gives a list of other common species and their host plants)
He then goes on to say: The flea beetles have very highly-developed hind-legs and possess the power to jump. Their larvae develop in the stem, in the roots or leaves of the host plant and are generally not very conspicuous.
The overwhelming majority of the small Pea- and Bean-beetles (Bruchinae) develop in the seeds of leguminous plants. Best known is the pea weevil Bruchus pisorum which develops on peas. The adults leave the peas in june and hide in the soil or elsewhere during the rainy season. At the end of february they become sexually mature, copulate and oviposit on the young pea pods. The small larva pierces the wall of the pod and enters the still soft green pea. There it develops till May, when it pupates. Before pupation it prepares a pupal cell in the pea as well as a circular hatching hole, which remains covered with the thin epidermis only. Even though more than one larva should enter the seed, only one completes its development. The others die at an early larval stage.
The following species develop in a similar way: Pseudopachymerus lallemanti, Pachymerus pallidus on Acacia farnesiana, Bruchus trifolii, B. alfierii in the seeds of the Egyptian clover, B. lentis in the seeds of lentils, B. luteicornis, B. viciae, B. chiensis, B. rufimanus on vicia and Lathyrus, B. emarginatus on Pisum, B. tristicula on lupinus, B. ulicison Ulex, Bruchidius astragali on Astragalus.
The very polyphagous Bruchus quinqueguttatus pastes its large white eggs on hard ripe leguminous seeds. It develops independantly of the seasons and is one of the few species which attack the hard, ripe and not only the young, growing seeds.

Leaf beetles are partially recognizable by their tarsal formula, which appears to be 4-4-4, but is actually 5-5-5.[1] They are distinguished from long-horned beetles (family Cerambycidae) by their short, filiform antennae. Adult and larval leaf beetles feed on all sorts of plant tissue. Many are economically important pests of agriculture, for example the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), the asparagus beetle (Crioceris asparagi), the cereal leaf beetle (Oulema melanopus), and various flea beetles.
