Family Bostrichidae

Bodenheimer (Animal Life in Palestine, 1935) says: In the Bostrychid beetles the large thorax covers the head completely from above. The large black Apate monachus is common. The host plants in which its larvae develop are still unknown but some leguminous shrubs are suspected. The adults appear in June/July and eat tunnels 4-15cm in length through the twigs of Cirus, ornamental, and other trees. Only after this feeding period do they become sexually mature. Schistocerus bimaculatus develops in drying vine-twigs, Sinoxylon sexdentatum and Scobicia chevrieri in the fig tree and Rhizopertha dominica develops in wheat.

From Wikipedia:
The Bostrichidae are a family of beetles with more than 700 described species. They are commonly called auger beetles, False powderpost beetles or Horned powderpost beetles. The head of most auger beetles cannot be seen from above, as it is downwardly directed and hidden by the thorax. An exception is the powderpost beetles from the subfamily Lyctinae.
